26. Glashütte
Although produced according to the same principles as the Underwood, the “Glashütte”, from the place of the same name in Germany, was not so successful. Glashütte was the centre of clock manufacturing in Germany and entered a crisis after the First World War which resulted in the town starting production of typewriters in 1922 in order to prevent the population from migrating and to avoid unemployment. 36 different companies were thus merged which all manufactured individual parts from which the “Glashütte” typewriter was assembled. However, due to unsuccessful sales, production was ceased 3 years later.
