Various calculating machines appeared on the market parallel to the development of the typewriter. A symbiosis between typewriters and calculating machines emerged in the form of accounting machines which became increasingly important in offices alongside standard typewriters. The USA, where Remington designed a typewriter with a calculating mechanism and decimal tabulator in 1896, was at the forefront in this field.
The Elliott-Fischer was a special model, the down-stroke mechanism of which enabled typing in books and on hard surfaces such as book covers.
